Guidance to support careers education activities can be found below:

Business Volunteering:

Could you inspire a young person with their career journey?

Sharing your industry knowledge can make a difference to the options a young person considers for their career. You could be the person who changes the life of a young person, just by showing them what is possible.

We know from experience that interactions with people from business and industry can have a big impact on the future career choices that a young person makes. According to the pilot FutureSkills survey, young people are benefiting from an increase in employer engagement:

• 80% of young people have an increased awareness of different careers

• 75% of young people have a greater understanding of what they need to do to achieve their ambitions

• 70% of young people feel more motivated to work hard at school and college

Dorset Careers Hub offer a volunteering model to connect business professionals and schools/colleges to transform careers education, and in turn, support young people with their best next steps. Follow the link, here

Careers Exhibitions:

Careers fairs are a great way to promote your organisation, and inspire about jobs, apprenticeships and further education programmes available at your company. For guidance on how to prepare for Careers fairs, check out this useful link from Youth Employment UKCareers Fairs Checklist for Employers

Employability Workshops:

Employability workshops can raise career aspirations, awareness and develop further knowledge around preparation towards CV Writing, Application Support and Mock Interviews.

Employability workshops are valuable for all young people embarking on careers, as it helps to raise understanding of the different requirements needed to access your organisation and/or sector.

Mock Interviews involve educators inviting business leaders into schools to hold practice interviews for their students, which are an emulation of a job interview used for training purposes. The exercise usually resembles a real interview as closely as possible, for the purpose of providing a learning experience for students. More information on the impact of mock interviews can be found here, via Founders4Schools.

A useful first step for young people to understand how to demonstrate their skills, interests and experience is by creating an impactful CV to showcase themselves. Barclays Life Skills have created a useful resource, 'CV skills lesson one: Writing a successful CV', which can be accessed, here.

PWC Early Careers Team have developed an 'Employability Hub', which helps prepare young people with a suite of different resources, ranging from online assessments, video interview and assessment centres.

For Application Support guidance, organisations can complete The Careers and Enterprise Company's 'Employer Standards' free assessment and framework tool.

The Employer Standards were created and designed by employers for employers of all sizes - to understand best practice in careers education outreach and measure themselves against it. Visit the Employer Standards for Careers Education page to learn more and review the framework.

Once the assessment has been completed, organisations will be able to access a wealth of resources, including the Standard 5 'Supporting young people with application processes' guide.
